Animal Ambulance de Heuvelrug – Part 2

After having a cup of coffee with Piet, the ambulance coordinator of the Animal Protection and driver of the animal ambulance in Houten, we immediately started with our first task: bringing an injured duck and goose to the Utrecht Bird Rescue Foundation, also known as Rotsoord. While we were on our way, we received a phone call. At a family’s home in Cothen, the dog had caught a small mouse.

Cothen

Upon arrival, a small mouse was handed over to us. We estimated that the mouse was no older than a few days. After providing the necessary care for the mouse and while we were on our way to the Utrecht Bird Rescue Foundation, we received a phone call from a construction worker. During construction work in a house, he had caught an injured pigeon.

When we arrived at the house, which was undergoing thorough renovations, we were greeted by the construction worker who guided us to a box where the injured pigeon was kept. Back at the animal ambulance, we thoroughly examined the pigeon and quickly realized that its wing had likely been broken for some time. Once we had provided all the necessary care for the animals, we continued on our way to the Utrecht Bird Rescue Foundation.

Upon arrival at the Utrecht Bird Rescue Foundation, we brought in the duck, pigeon, and goose. We were soon informed that it looked very bleak for the duck and pigeon. Fortunately, the goose seemed to be in a better condition. Later in the day, they were examined by a veterinarian. After providing the necessary care for the mouse, we set off to deliver it to the Toevlucht Foundation in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, I have not received any further updates on the goose.

De Toevlucht Foundation Amsterdam

Due to roadworks on the A12, it was mostly closed off, causing us to be stuck in traffic for quite a while on our way to Amsterdam. An hour and a half later, we arrived at De Toevlucht. We handed over the mouse, which was immediately identified as a wood mouse, to one of the staff members. Luckily, the wood mouse was healthy and will be released back into nature at a later stage.

Leersum

While we were stuck in traffic to Amsterdam, we received a phone call about an injured bat in Leersum, so we drove straight there after our visit to De Toevlucht. Residents found the bat in their garden and provided shelter from the heat and water. We took the bat to the bat sanctuary in Maarssen. The bat was identified as a pipistrelle bat with a broken wing. For bats, splinting a wing is not possible as they will bite themselves to death. To spare the pipistrelle bat from further suffering, euthanasia is the only option.

In conclusion

Just like last time, I want to thank Piet for allowing me to shadow him for another day. I look back on a busy but very interesting day, where unfortunately we also had to witness some sad things.
