Today we visited the Museum of Antiquities in Leiden. We are fascinated by everything related to Egyptian and Roman times. The museum has a temporary exhibition called “Gods of Egypt” (until March 31, 2019).
Gods of Egypt
The ancient Egyptians had thousands of gods. Many of their gods were personifications of natural forces such as earth, water, and the sky. Other gods represented war, diseases, or love. The ancient Egyptians believed that the gods lived in the heavens and the underworld. On earth, they could manifest themselves in certain animals, plants, places, or natural phenomena. That is why the Egyptians worshipped animals or trees, and the gods were depicted with animal heads.
What is the Museum of Antiquities
The Museum of Antiquities, located in the center of Leiden, is the place where antiquity comes to life. The museum has a beautiful collection divided into four areas: Egypt, Classical Antiquity (Greeks, Romans, Etruscans), Near East, and the Netherlands (prehistory, Roman times, Middle Ages). With multiple temporary exhibitions throughout the year, there is always something new to discover. For more information, please refer to the museum’s website: www.rmo.nl
